parallel actions, sequence, or actions happening together

dictionary-form verb/ている + 間

間 means that during the whole period, the following action or state continues.

It often follows the ている form or noun + の.

電車に乗っている間、ずっと本を読んでいました。

I was reading a book the whole time I was on the train.

If something happens once within the period, 間に is more natural.

Without に, the time span stretches across the whole duration.
