when; on the occasion of

verb辞书形 / ta-form verb / noun + の + 際に

Indicates a specific occasion or time. It is more formal than ときに.

Common in notices, instructions, procedures, and rules.

入館する際に、受付で学生証を見せてください。

When entering the building, please show your student ID at reception.

You do not need 際に in casual conversation; ときに is more natural for ordinary situations.

A formal 'when' for occasions.
